What are the advantages of Micro Led Display compared to other display technologies?

July 14, 2024

In the early years, when TV display technology was still the world of LEDs, the emergence of OLED was recognized by everyone with various overwhelming advantages, and it was even called a new generation of display technology. At that time, it was also proposed that the future development trend of TV display technology would be self-luminous QLED. At that time, many people believed that LED technology would be replaced by OLED in the future.

However, today is different from the past. The popularity of Micro LED display technology in the past two years has given many people in the industry see new hopes for the development of the industry. So what is so good about Micro LED?

Principle of Micro LED display

Micro LED is a new generation of display technology, which is actually the LED screen panel we see daily, that is, LED miniaturization and matrix technology. The high-density and small-size LED array integrated on a chip is like an LED display screen that each pixel can be addressed and individually driven to light up, which reduces the pixel point distance from millimeters to micrometers.

Generally speaking, the total surface is less than 2500mm? The LED chip is a 50mm x 50mm square or a circular chip with a diameter of 55mm.

Advantages of Micro LED display

Since 2016, Apple announced that it will be possible to adopt Micro LED technology in its follow-up products, and this technology has become well known since then. Compared with the existing OLED technology, Micro LED has obvious advantages. First of all, its micron-level pixel pitch enables each pixel to be individually controlled and driven. Therefore, its resolution, brightness, contrast, and power consumption are no less than OLED.

Especially in terms of service life, because it is made of inorganic materials, its service life and stability are much stronger than those of organic molecules in OLED screens, and the burn-in aging phenomenon that easily occurs on OLED screens is also much less. In addition, Micro LED has a very big advantage that the resolution is super high. This is also due to the micron-level pixel pitch. Due to the small size, the performance of the resolution is particularly high.

It is reported that the iPhone 6s with Retina display is 400PPI, but if it uses Micro LED display, it can easily reach 1500PPI. Like OLED, Micro LED is also self-luminous, which greatly reduces power consumption. Compared with OLED, color is easier to accurately debug.

Current status of Micro LED

According to the latest data given by the industrial research organization Yole Développement, the Micro LED display industry has confirmed that 125 companies and organizations have submitted nearly 1,500 patents, of which Apple owns 62 patents and ranks first.

At present, although Micro LED display technology has obvious advantages, it is not popular in the market. In fact, at the 2012 CES six years ago, Sony exhibited a 55-inch full HD Micro LED display, which was also a sensation at the time. Subsequently, industry giants including Apple and Samsung have entered the Micro LED market. At the beginning of this year, Samsung's 146-inch Micro LED display device exhibited at CES once again caused a sensation in the industry.

The reason why Micro LED has not been popularized is because at present, there are still technical limitations. It requires mature miniaturization process technology and mass transfer technology, not only to shrink millimeter-level LED chips to only 1% of the original size, but also to transfer high-density, arrayed, and thin-film LED crystals to the drive panel.

In addition, due to the poor wavelength consistency of the Micro LED, the LED color is uneven, so I want to make a whole Micro LED panel the size of a current smartphone, and the yield rate is very low. In recent years, some experts in Micro LED technology said that this technology cannot be applied to products such as iPhone and iPad for the time being, and may first appear in products with small screens such as Apple Watch.

The current more reliable statement is to apply Micro LED technology to wearable smart devices, and then project them on a large screen.

Micro LED Outlook

Although it is still too early for the popularization of Micro LED, with various advantages, it is believed that the prospect of Micro LED display technology is still very broad. At present, the biggest bottleneck of this technology lies in the technical bottleneck, and as giants such as Apple and Samsung join in one after another, Micro LED display technology will become more and more mature.

I believe that it will not be long before the iPhone, iPad and other devices using Micro LED display technology will appear in our lives.
